Actually, I've had my eye on this coin for several days now. I really don't know what kind of error it is. But I'm confident that it's genuine in every respect. Calling it "scrap" really doesn't provide a satisfactory answer. While it's roughly the shape of an elliptical clip, the metal sticking out next to Washington's forehead doesn't fit the profile. I don't think that it's an incomplete punch that broke after the strike, as there's no punch mark next to the drummer's hand. Severe pre-strike damage is a possibility, but that doesn't explain the struck-through errors on the reverse. I'll hopefully be able to narrow down the possibilities after I receive it and weigh it. I regret that my bid left some folks here disappointed, but these things can't be helped.

Well, Yoko, is you are to be put bid, I can say that it was the right person to win it. Now to wait and see what Mike has to say on it when he gets it.

Yes, incomplete "punch" is what I meant to say. That stretched flap of metal by the drummers hand (or forehead) seems to have been folded over from the forehead. The metal striations there are interesting.
I'm looking forward to seeing your conclusions on this Mike.

Congratulations Mike Diamond! Hey, no disappointment on my part. I'm just happy that I felt that it was a true error coin and was confident enough to bid. Sorry I boosted the price you had to pay.
Thanks for letting us know that you felt and please update us when you have a final definition of the error type.

Mike, how high were you going on it? I knew it was a good one. If I had seen it before Yoko, you would have had some competition.

While I'm reluctant to provide an exact figure, I will say that my snipe bid was considerably more than Yokozuna's bid.

I now have the coin. I see evidence of only one strike. It weighs 2.74 grams, slightly less than half the weight of a normal quarter. The large struck-through error directly below the drummer is actually a brockage from a struck fragment. It shows the T of LIBERTY and a little bit of the flanking R and Y. I guess you could call this coin a "struck fragment", but such a label is deeply unsatisfying. My best guess is that this started out as a normal quarter planchet that later suffered severe pre-strike damage. But that doesn't explain the additional debris in the striking chamber, at least one piece of which preceded the arrival of the oval quarter planchet.

It's possible that the hopper that fed this planchet into the coining press had other fragments. Perhaps all the fragments were casualties of the same destructive event that occurred farther back in the production stream.

Amazing that a coin with this appearance is anything but Post Mint damage.

Thanks for the updates Mike. I had to take a look again to refresh my memory. Is that a copper fragment arcing SW from the base of the Y (RTY) into Washingtons hair?

That appears to be a little bit of copper that was struck into Washington's head, although it's mixed with flecks of cladding. Probably a piece of chewed-up metal from this or another quarter planchet.

Thanks for the update. It's really interesting that a number of different error types wound up on a single coin. I'm glad it went to the right buyer for a detailed analysis. It's a fascinating coin!

It seems like this would be called a "struck fragment with brockage from a struck fragment"..That seems a bit more satisfying.
