I have Rolls Of Sacagawea,Presidential, Kennedy, State Quarters Westward Nickels and Lincoln all wrapped mostly Mint wrapped except my Lincolns. NO I have never unwrapped them. I am Content to Know what each looks like. I guess they are an investment for my gran children or great gran children even though I know better, my hope is they are still wrapped 100 years from now

.... I'm not sure if me knowing that this is the first one they " haven't" cancelled on you in two years MAKES ME FEEL ANY MORE CONFIDENT OR HAVE ANY FAITH/HOPE !I've been ordering Mint products directly from the Mint since 2006 and they've NEVER cancelled on ME ! Now I'm wondering if this will be the first time !.. .....

Quote: Do the rolls stop them getting bag marks, or are they already marked before they are rolled? They do tend to have bagmarks already but if the coins are still in a bag, they will continually get bagmarks so the rolls do offer some measure of long term protection. OBW(original bank wrapped) rolls, especially Lincolns wheat cents from the 40s and 50s, can be a treasure trove of varieties and higher grade coins but that does not necessarily apply to moderns. Quote: I think the temptation to open the roll to see if I had a rare error or something would be too great. I have that exact same problem

At first the thought of having a collection of something you never get to look at seems very strange. Thinking about it I am sure there must be blind people who collect coins. I guess they never see their coins either and are quite happy with their collections. Imagine opening a roll after years and years to find a bunch of washers! Ouch! I guess that's a good reason for buying them from the mint and not ebay.

Just called..."your order is still being processed". AAARRGGGG Quote: Why is there so much hype and excitement about these coins? It's the first redesign of the cent coin in 50 years! Also, four different designs will be made this year before the mint settles on a final design in 2010....so the cents made this year are indeed special. Please consider that the cent is the most collected coin in the US, the demand is HUGE. And if all that isn't enough, every US citizen loves Abe Lincoln, one of the greatest leaders ever in the world....this release is a tribute to a great man.

Yes he was a great man. Not a looker but a great man!
I saw something on numismaster today about the 2010 designs.
You would think they would get rid of the penny and put Abe on a regular dollar coin. That might get the public to use it.

QuickSilver......Quote:Ouch! I guess that's a good reason for buying them from the mint and not ebay. I NEVER buy anything from ebay at all....so....not a problem for me ! And at Estate auctions/Coin auctions....they will let you carefully open the roll and look at what you're getting.....so......ABSOLUTELY NO FEAR OF GETTING A ROLL OF WASHERS !..... EVER !.... When you buy a roll of Wheats from say 1930 Denver Mint and it's in an original "bank wrapped roll paper", you "can" open it and see what you've got before you buy it ! And most of these older ones are never in original machine wrapped U.S. Mint paper. (did they even "have" machine wrapped rolls back then ?... ) Quote: Thinking about it I am sure there must be blind people who collect coins. I guess they never see their coins either and are quite happy with their collections. But the point is...... you're not purchasing " Like a blind person"..... nor are you enjoying them " Like a blind person would"..... ...... That's just GOOFY !Any new Ultra Modern rolls that are machine wrapped from the bank OR the Mint are overwhelmingly easily safely assumed that what is in there IS IN THERE !.....The Mint would not "roll wrap" washers or try to trick you !.......Nor would the Stringer Rolls that banks get.....this is just NOT a factor and NOT a fear OR NOT A PROBLEM THAT ANYONE HAS HAD..... So......after having said all of this...........DUDE !.....MATE !.... Why don't you go ahead and order some rolls of something from America ! ..... ..... ..... .....

Unfortunately for me the pleasure in my collecting is being able to look at the coins, not the packaging.
Plus I only collect one of each type. So this would not work for me on both counts.
Very interesting facet of the hobby however. Amazing how even people doing essentially the same thing, collecting coins, can be soooo different.
Besides it sounds like ordering these things from the mint is very stressful!

(Though I may run the risk of persecution and scathing criticism for saying this, I really admired The Iron Lady too - Margret Thatcher) (and though he was seemingly very unpopular, I thought Tony Blair was one of the smartest/most able Prime Ministers from there in quite some time)(though he resembled a Hobbit quite a bit didn't he ?....Ha Ha) Forgive me if I've overstepped please...

Well.....just keep in mind, that, as you say, "it is only a facet" to collecting coins. There are few to zero "roll collectors" who ONLY collect rolls. In fact I bet NO ONE on this forum who pursues the rolls (old or new) would say that was the majority of their collection ! In fact our (roll holders) collections would " mirror" your collection !...in style and maybe even type......It's just that "a small part" of "ours" would also include some BU rolls as "part" of our collection !.....only "part"......and for me it's a tiny part......but a "part" nonetheless. We "roll holders" collect the same coins as everyone else does......same albums....same folders.....same Sets.....same Graded Slabs....different countries as well done in the same way as everyone else including you.......it's just that ours (roll keepers) just includes some rolls, and some collectors have more rolls than others too of course.....some mostly older rolls - 50-80 years old....some newer rolls....some have a mixture of BOTH....... there ! ..... that's the best way I can explain it ! ....

All, I still recall my first trip to a bank here in the UK asking for rolls of coins. They never heard of rolled coins...they said that they come in bags which means they are in contact with each other all of the time. I still have no idea how to quickly obtain new releases from banks. This year, if I was still in the US, I would probably buy rolls of the Lincolns from the mint since Lincoln first appeared on the cent in 1909 and now it is 2009! I was very thrilled to receive the two of the log cabin ones from matchbox. Could you imagine having a mint wrapped roll of Lincoln cents from 1909? That would be something to have. I always have been curious how people in the UK become collectors since the concept of searching rolls (guess it would be bags) seems odd to them. By the way, I order from both the US Mint and The Royal Mint....both frustrate me and both have cancelled orders on me. Ken
