Hi everyone,

I was wondering if this Augustus denarius with Gaius and Lucius is real or fake. I have my doubts because of the extra material (silver) on the nose on the obverse and the caesar on te reverse. I've never seen such a defect on an ancient coin.

Thanks a lot!

Ancient coins can have defects. It's the ugly green toning that bothers me more than the lump spot which could have been caused by a die flaw. It may be a barbarous imitation of debased silver which caused the green coloration or modern fake, I don't know. Even if genuine I would not buy it.

It seems to me authentic, but the condition on the front looks very bad (This is unfortunate, considering that the inscriptions on the reverse are rarely intact.) So, if you want to collect it, I won't stop you, but I don't recommend it.

It appears to be a genuine denarius but .
A very big but !
The obverse shows very definite signs of 'smoothing' especially the cheek area and field behind the head
While this type of mischief is not uncommon on some bronze coins it is abhorrent on silver !
Having done the damage our would be 'Picasso' decided to make amends by artificially toning it !
The blueish and reddish brown areas look to be an attempt to salvage a 'conservation' gone terribly wrong
I wouldn't buy it .
But if it were cheap enough ?
Only dirt cheap !

The toning looks almost as if someone took a marker to it.

The smoothing on the high areas was totally unnecessary. The coin looks genuine to me, but as already said, it needs to be reasonably priced.

This is chemically induced toning.
