In modern times, it seems that steel and iron coins were minted only during times of war until fairly recently. They generally did not last long, however. Here are a few examples. Let's see yours! Poland 10 Fenigow 1918 (iron) - minted during German occupation Belgium 2 Francs 1944 (steel) - minted in US on 1943 1 Cent planchets France - La Rochelle 10 Centimes notgeld (steel) Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

I have a good number of those types in my collection. Here is one of my best, played a few days ago on 20Qs, a gem uncirculated 1920 25 pfennig pattern made from iron for use in the German city-state of Aachen. Iron in this condition is quite rare these days

Fantastic, mrwhatisit! Yes, most iron and steel coins show the effects of humidity. Yours is incredibly well-preserved, especially considering that it is 124 years old!

I've always hesitated to get any of these because of rust issues. How do folks preserve/store these? Seems like a losing proposition, but the designs are very cool.
