Lately, I have been delving deeper into inverted mint marks. I am confused by PCGS on the 1941-S Jefferson nickel, specifically the FS-503 inverted small S mint mark. The note below appears on the registry set page. Despite that, PCGS still has a landing page for that variety with no additional verbiage. I searched for information on a debunked IMM, but all I found was a random coin forum discussion that contained only vague speculation involving Variety Vista. My 5th edition Cherrypicker's Guide still shows the small-S IMM as a valid entry.
Anybody have insight into what happened to FS-503?
Well, got my ebay pick today. It's a head scratcher to me. Maybe aside from the weird little bent tail, we are meant to look at that deep eye shape of the upper S? I tried comparing it to the Wexler listing and a couple PCGS FS-503 examples.
