I've come across a 1988-D with what looks like a pretty convincing double ear variety, though I cannot find this variety documented anywhere; (only for the 1988-P). Check out this shot from NGC for the 2018 Double Ear (looks very similar IMO): What are the differences fundamentally between the two that make the 2018 appear legitimate and the 1988 not?
