When I first read this post a few days ago it really reminded me of a scholarly journal article that I had read a few years back. Just to make sure that I wasn't just dreaming this, I found the article again. In The March 2005 Scandinavian Journal of History (Vol 30, No.1) there was an article about coins that were found beneath the wooden floors of stave churches in Norway. Supposedly in one instance coins were found ranging from the middle ages to the later part of the 20th century. Since coins collected there for centuries as the old church was in use, I'm certain that this must have been enormous.
