I've just read from the OeNB that both silver and gold Philharmonics were available for sale at all banks in Austria. I was just wondering how is the price calculated and is it convenient to buy? As in over the counter?

I live in Austria, and I did not know you could get coins. I lived in Spain as well, and the 12 euro coin was bought right over the counter, you have your 12 euros for the 12 euro coin, €5 worth of silver, and that was it.
They say that this money is normal currency in austria, therefore it is a normal coin, and you just ask the banks for it.
So I would assume it is convenient, if you speak German with a strange accent.

I have no interest in these coins, there are too many of these these types of coins to bother collecting. I prefer REAL circulating currency. I have not seen a single one of these in my change, and I don't expect to. Some of these "circulating coins" are horrible.

Though I am not sure if the gold coins are available over the counter. When was this coin produced, it does not seem to be from this year or the year before.

In Austria you have basically three types of coins. First you have the regular euro pieces (including the commemorative €2 coins) which are legal tender anywhere in Euroland. Then there are those regional collector coins, usually silver or gold, which can be had at many banks, and even at some trafik stores. Collector coins (in AT €5, €10, etc.) are legal tender in the issuing member state only, and do not really circulate. And finally you have the Philharmonics, "pro forma" legal tender but issued as bullion pieces; I think many banks have them. Have a look at the folder:

ahh... Thanks Christian. I was just wondering about the avenues of the Philharmonics since so many of these are sold at pretty low premiums, especially for a coin (and not a round or a bar)
