Just my humble opinion, but the 1st and 3rd coin on the 1st pic look kind of... re-cast. The copper color is not even (you can see specks of brighter places)

They all appear to have been over cleaned by zapping which has removed any patina and caused the surface of the coins to pit. They all appear to be coins of Constantine I and II with coin #2 looking like a barbaric imitation of Constantine I.

The second coin is not ancient. It is what we refer to as an "uncleaned fake". There are modern fakes made in modern times to flesh out uncleanded coin lots.

I have included images of other examples below for comparison.

@ echizento what do you mean? "They all appear to have been over cleaned by zapping " I have just started taking an interest in coin colletion, and would like to know can I tell..these ones were purchased at a weekly market stall..i wont be going back there..

@maridvnvm thanks for the link I will have a look at it now. I just feel like an idiot buying fakes and overcleaned coins ,oh well might do better next time

Zapping is the term used to described the electrolysis cleaning technique, which is quite brutal and strips all the patina from the coin and taking it back to the bare metal. The results are not what most ancient coin collectors look for. The patina is part of the coin that has built up over the years and this process removes it. The bare metal underneath is often in poor condition and can be quite rough to the touch. Most bronze coins are cleaned by slowly cleaning the coin by soaking them in olive oil or distilled water to penetrate the dirt layers and then gently removing the dirt from the coin whilst maintaining the patina.

I can't add to much to this thread as Maridunum has said it all though I can post a few photo's of a couple of coins one just a little over cleaned and one just cleaned enough

this is the coin a little over cleaned

and this one just cleaned enough

as you can see the patina makes it a more attractive coin

P.S.there are those coins with desert patina these I leave the desert patina alone as they look great as they are

Edited for the P.S.
regards
