The Mauritania 1975 - 1977 Series was never released and only the Specimen notes were available.

However in the past few weeks these seem to have been released in matching serial number sets for collectors.

Does anyone have any more information on these notes? How many were released and by whom?

Hello This topic was a massive discussion within the walls of the IBNS

The topic had comments as below
Re: Unissued Africa Mauritania Banknotes

When I posted the questions bout these notes, I was aware there was activity afoot to work with the Central Bank of Mauritania to empty their vault of old, poor condition demonetized banknotes and coins and send for recycling. But there was also some info that these notes exist and were printed by DLR or G&D but for some reason never issued by the Bank. The un-circulated 1981 and 1989 notes came onto the collector market at the end of January and are now available from several dealers. I bought an example of each. There is no doubt in my mind that these are authentic and were printed in the 1980s. The red one ( 1981) has really deep intaglio giving it the great tactile effect typical of older banknotes. The blue-green one (1989) looks similar to the ones issued but different in a few ways. Again no clue why they were printed.

But it is a great story. A mystery maybe lost in time. And this is the kind of obscure info that excites me about being a banknote collector. So I am hoping some folks in this community of experts might some insight. Did a bank governor order banknotes prematurely and then had to go with a different design? Were they emergency notes? Was there an abrupt change in bank governor?

@ShareBear

A German speaking website for banknote collectors has just published an article about the 1975-1977 series.
Apparently, these (unissued) notes were sold by the Central Bank of Mauritania to collectors recently. Price for a set of three: US$ 80-100.
According to the article they were printed by DeLaRue.
There is no mention on how many sets have been sold.

Finally, don't forget that the period 1975-1978 was a very tumultuous time in Mauritania's history. It's probably very difficult to find out today what was going on behind the scene, including the Central Bank.
