NGC - Coin of the Day: On this day in 1185, a high-ranking Byzantine official killed the man trying to arrest him. Proclaimed emperor the next day, Isaac II Angelos then handed his cruel predecessor over to the people, who killed him. This Byzantine gold hyperpyron shows Isaac II.
Of course he is the figure on the left of the reverse (not the one sitting on the throne obverse), being crowned by Michael the Archangel. Love the iconography on Byzantine coins, which was the template for the more famous Venetian grosso.
