So this lot of 6 world coins just sold at downies auction for $1700 aud with quite the bidding war to finish! By my quick maths the coins in this lot wouldn't be worth much more than $300 aud and that's with fairly generous grading. Did I miss something here? What is your opinion?

Firstly the photo is awful and they only show the coins together and only on one side! That's terrible for an auction house.
None of those coins are very rare BUT the 1923s half is indeed conditionally quite rare in AU or better
If this coin could grade out at MS anything it would be worth more than the entire lot went for (assuming this is AUD)
I assume that the bidders got to see the coins in hand and were bidding on that - the 23s even from that awful photo could indeed be AU or even better so that's probably it.
Hope that helps

For that price, I sure hope they saw more than this one image..

@Dearborn - exactly !
But to be fair people do sometimes do stupid things. I once bought something at HA in the auction room having not bothered to even look at it even though it was right there based solely on the fact that it had not hit the low estimate....
Okay okay I was a friend of the auctioneer and wanted to be supportive but we still do stupid things when young :( Although to be fair I then sold it again a couple of years later for a small profit.
I hope I am a bit wiser now :(

Very interesting thank you for your answers! Indeed the auction company (which is also a fairly reputable Australian auction house so you would expect better) typically only includes one side in lot photos, and both sides for individual coins. I don't know why they do this especially as I live interstate and inspection is impossible. To their credit the photo is a much higher quality and pops out but I also had to compress it for the forum.

Indeed. A heck of a gamble from that photo.
