I have a small collection of silver and several hundred wheat pennies that I have collected over the last 20 years or so. My favorite is the Peace dollars, which have really gone up in price since I bought them. I don't know a ton about coins, so I'm hoping to learn and improve my understanding.

to the forums...
I started my honeymoon in Portland back in the day... good times:)

Peace dollars are super good but my first lesson in coin scammers was unfortunately from a 1928 S with the S worn down and sold as a 28p :(. I didn't think to check it until a white after I bought it after which the dealer refused to give pay me back for it.., :(

That's rough about getting scammed Manosgerms. I was fortunate enough to have good relationship with an antique shop I did business with through my work at the time. I traded a antique Singer sowing machine for my first 4 Peace dollars and a Morgan. That was a long time ago, but it got me started.

Its important to learn. In the end it was a fairly small price to pay to learn a bunch of new things.
Sounds like you got a good deal - sewing machines are cool but less and less in demand in these days of throwaway consumerism:(
Always be on the lookout for the 1922 high relief Peace dollar :)

How does one spot the high relief?

Well firstly it is a matte finish
Secondly it uses the die of the 1921 high relief with the characteristic thicker spikes of the crown
For me the absolute telltale right away is that the spike that hits the E is level with the bottom part of the E but with the low relief it goes further above. It's pretty much impossible to miss if you are looking for it,
However, those are so incredibly rare they are basically 100k for anything in 60 or above...
I have never found one in the wild :(
