Pennypusher, just remember this: you are the hope of our country's future, and if you give up now, no hope. Well, maybe it's not quite as dire as that, but don't give up on your hobby just because someone a generation ahead of you won't give you the time of day - remember, their generation, not yours, messed up things for the rest of us. Or maybe it was my generation that screwed things up. Anyway, hang in there and keep reporting back here. We're behind you, kid.

sounds to me that you are letting "them" get the best of you and "they", "them" aren't even doing anything to directly hurt you. Lighten up on yourself and keep your head up!

I'm younger also, and when dealers are rude, I just look at them and tell them that I'm not going to buy anything with that attitude, and walk off. If it's at a show, I'll try to buy something at the next table over!

I agree with the other folks here. Don't give up because of a few mean people. Only give up collecting when you no longer enjoy collecting. Avoid that particular show maybe.

I despise when I go to a show and get looked down upon by some grumpy dealers who treat me unfairly

Look on the bright side, when that happens at a show you at least have the option to thumb your nose at them and not lose any money When it happens on ebay, you usually don't find out until after you paid and have a problem(then you realize you have a bigger problem)

I wouldn't let it get you down. These type of people are not unique to the hobby or life in general.

The only sure-fire way a dealer will take me seriously is if I buy a coin from them

Sometimes you have to pay to play. I typically make small purchases from dealers that I am unfamiliar with. This allows me to gauge how they price their coins (as a world coin collector I don't have the Krause catalogs memorized) and allows me to build a relationship with that individual. Once a dealer sees you as repeat customer they are more likely to be attentive to your needs and offer you better prices. One dealer in particular always sells to me at a significant discount from book value. He also knows that I am putting together an Afghan type set, and keeps his eyes open for coins that I might be interested in.

I agree with jimmy28303....there will always be dealers like that no matter how old you are....it is their loss, they just hurt themselves in lost business.

Nevermind, Pennypusher. In life you'll find the positives outweigh the negatives by a huge margin. Trust me, I've been around.

Small consolation, but the shoddy treatment you describe can happen also at the opposite end of life - so don't take it too personal.

I mean; come shop with me and trail behind a distance and you'd swear I was the 'Invisible Man'. And the bad manners can quickly turn much worse. But not all of the time, as with this following short story titled "Twelve items or less" by Leslie Harvey, taking a subtle swipe at the widespread indifference aimed squarely at the no-longer-young ....

Cash firmly in hand I placed the bottle of sars on Coles' express counter thinking mine will be a swift exit. And there she was - and I just had to tell her: "God, them rabbit's ears look really good on you. So tell me, how come you're the only one wearing them?"

I swear she had Jennifer Hawkins' numbing smile, when she answered: "The girls here say wearing long ears makes them feel rather silly and so choose not to."

"Fair enough" I said. "But good on you for being your lovely self and wearing them anyway ... plus your emerald eyes are simply out of this world."

The words just fell out. And I instantly found myself searching for reverse, in sudden need not to sound like I was flirting with some-one obviously decades younger. But she wasn't about to release her hold - even when my face reddened and fumbled change fell to the floor she was quickly there helping me find it.

The queue behind had grown as queue's do; and I apologised to every-one for taking so long. But no-body seemed to mind. And when my 'Angel at the till' told me "Have your best ever Easter." I could only think that's already happened.

When I reached the car I still felt almost too 'high' to drive. And thought, funny how she gave me two receipts for one bottle of sars when even one receipt seemed pointless. But later when I checked there was only one receipt, and on the other tiny slip were penned these few words ....

Work like you don't need the money.
Love like you've never been hurt.
Dance like there's nobody watching.
And cherish each moment on Earth..

Happy Easter ©

Glenzy has the right idea. Take a fifty dollar bill and 50, one dollar bills. Carry them in your pocket and when a grumpy dealer is rude, non chalantly take the roll out of your pocket, and KINDLY say, "I guess I will have to find another dealer who wants to make some money." Just like that scene from the movie, "Pretty Woman", when Julia Roberts revisits the store that would not wait on her the previous day. I LOVE THAT SEEN.

OR, you could be like me, carry $3,000.00 in cash, some hundreds, some fiftys and a few twentys. Walk up to a dealer, do a quick wave of the cash and say, "I need someone to do some SERIOUS sucking up to me!"

Pennypusher.....
Obviously these "jerks" hurt your feelings one too many times. And that can quelch your motivations and excitement over various coins and even, as you say, make you question even wanting to be in this hobby.
I challenge you to find ONE SINGLE RUDE PERSON RIGHT HERE ON CCF !....
Very honest, decent, generous people right here. Do some business right here my friend !....
But, if and when you go to future coin shows, use some of that advice already given here ! It will help your attitude and how to handle "rude people". In fact ...... GO GET ONE OF THOSE T-SHIRTS THAT SAY "RUDE PEOPLE SUCK !" and wear "that" to the next show ! ....
If someone doesn't treat you with the UPMOST COURTESEY when you're there to buy things from them...... THEN THEY'RE JUST IDIOTS !
Instead of being "hurt", do what was already suggested and go to the table RIGHT BESIDE HIM and buy something and GRIN AT HIM WHILE YOU'RE HANDING THE MONEY OVER TO "THE OTHER GUY" !

REVENGE MAY BE A DISH BEST SERVED COLD,
BUT IMMEDIATE SATISFACTION TASTES SOOOO SWEEEEEET !

Hey !.....I just made that up.....I gotta go write that down !....

We all run through the gauntlet as we go through life ...... 2x4's smacking us in the head the whole way.....but eventually you learn when to duck ! .......

WOW !.....I'm on a roll here !.....

I volunteer to be the one single rude person here, but it's going to cost you to use me as a scapegoat....
