I recently have put my coin collecting on hold. The reason be because I am sick of being discriminated against because of my age. I despise when I go to a show and get looked down upon by some grumpy dealers who treat me unfairly simply because I am a young collector. The only sure-fire way a dealer will take me seriously is if I buy a coin from them(which is ridiculous). I always treat dealers(and people in general) kindly, yet there will be always some jerks there who need to learn some darn manners! -PP

Those guys need to work on their business skills. I mean, if I was in there position, I would certainly help you nurture your hobby. Then I would have a 25 year customer.

You should see how dumpy and dumb I look. I like to play stupid in antique malls away from where I live and see how people treat me sometimes in my T shirt and plaid shorts and flip flops.

Don't give up collecting just because of the dealers attitudes. If you like collecting coins there are a lot of other ways to get them than at coin shows and grumpy coin shop dealers.

This forum is a great place for young people to participate and also get coins. I would say I got about 1/3 of the coins in the past year right here in CCF and every trade or sale or even contest win (dig) was a lot of fun and very pleasant.

I know who Mayor West is Pennypusher, I think Meg Griffin got an interview with him once.
(My favorite top 5 shows on TV is F. Guy) They are even on my return address labels.

Hang around and keep interested. Young people are the future of our hobby! You're very important to me and I'm sure a lot of others in here would agree.

Don't give up collecting just take a break. After a while you will learn how to deal with ill mannered dealers. By the way, not all are ill mannered.

These dealers are a prime candidate for some cherry picking!

But in all seriousness, do not give up just because of a few bad seeds! You will always have friends here!

I don't know, I would look forward to making money off of them for what they don't know.

See, now I usually have the exact opposite reaction. I am 25. I just went to a small show, sat down and looked at some Barber dimes, looked for hits in my album, went to the next guy, did the same thing. By the time I got to about half way around the room, they all had them sitting out for me to search through. One guy was nice enough to pull out some (slightly) better date certified MS64 morgans for his 10 for $500 deal, and then made it 10 for $450!

Well I hate to be the one to break this to you pennypusher but, there will be dealers like that no matter how old you are. You just have to avoid them. I am a dealer myself and I have dealers that treat me that way at shows. it comes with the territory. you just have to learn who they are and avoid them.

Don't give up collecting because of the few dealers that don't know how to treat people. There are plenty of other dealers out there that will help and reat you right.

Why let them run you away from something you enjoy?

I can relate. I had a couple situations in the last year that almost had me hanging up my loupe.

First I went to my first coin show last spring. A guy had a pile of Barber dimes in his case with a sign next to it. I am pretty sure the sign was like $1.95 each. I was starting a type set, so I told him that I would like one. He looked at me like I was a complete idiot and told me they weren't available for individual sale, that I had to buy the whole pile and then walked away.

The next thing that happened, is that my sister in law gave me a bunch of coins to sell. I sold them here, $280 worth of silver dimes and quarters. Sent them out. Gave my sister in law her money. And then the wonderful post office "damaged" the package and all the silver came up missing. I had to refund the $280, did not pay for insurance, and did not ask for money back from my sister in law, since I felt I was dumb for not insuring.

So basically my whole coin budget is gone and I am still selling things to try to make up for my $280 loss.

I thought about walking away from the hobby since it caused me so much stress and financial pain, but decided I enjoyed looking at my Mercury dimes and Franklin half albums to much to stop.

So I am still here. The people here are great to trade and buy and sell with. Maybe coin shows aren't for you. I am not sure if they are for me yet either.

Ken

I have a local dealer who has actually always treated me BETTER because I was young....gave me quite a few good deals when I was younger, I guess a 13 year old spending $600 impressed him, haha.

But yeah, there are dealers like that out there. I went to this other guy, who thought he could take advantage of me because I was young...I was out of there real quick. Even then though, I really didn't know what I was doing too much (not the second time, but when I was 13) but my dad was kind of interested in it, which provided a security blanket.

My young friend , I hear and feel your pain. You know why, 'cause I went through the same thing when I was your age. I solved that problem at a coin show I attended. I photocopied a $100.00 bill 50 times and walked around the coin show with the wad of photocopies cut in the proper sizes as the real McCoy. ($5,000.00)
I walked around with the wad in my right hand acting sooo cool and nonchalant as if I owned the place.
You know the old saying " money talks and rules"; well you should see the respect I had from the old fogies then! Awesome , Baby Jesus.

I agree with what everyone else has said. There will always be people who are difficult to deal with, it that happens to be at a show, move on to the next dealer. There is much to be gained by befrending the neighborhood coin dealer, not only will they often cut you a price break, but they also are ofen full of knowledge about the hobby and helping you determine the best niche for you. I started out with the local dealer when I was 18. Don't give up on something you love because of poor dealers.
