Hello, It appears I may not have been as lucky on ebay as my last go around. It looks shiny all around rather than the typical mint luster and weighs in at 26.62 (cheap Amazon scale). I hope it is not a fake, for the price I paid I would be ok with over dipped.

I look forward to any feedback. I have started to purchase slabbed coins low MS in common dates because I am wary of purchasing any fake coins.

If I had to guess to see if I am learning at all. I'd say AU 53-55 details

the photos presented are saying

AU details (heavily cleaned/polished)

VTcollector17, just for you own knowledge base. shiny does not mean MS, a polished coin is going to look shiny. you are looking for luster which has a completely different look. note all the hairlines and scratches all over the coin, an indicator it was heavily cleaned and wiped with something to leave those marks

Pics are too dark to evaluate accurately.

Thanks I am always trying to learn. I understand luster and was excited by the cartwheel on some of my coins.

Problem areas I see include uniformity in color - tells me that it was probably heavily dipped and the cleaning marks.

I started with the idea of collecting a Morgan from every year regardless of mint mark. I am at 18. I am now trying to avoid heavily cleaned coins and possible fakes. That is why I will be searching for slabbed coins whenever possible.

tips for future reference

1. TPG's are not infallible. we have seen here time and time again where even the big houses like PCGS miss the grade. you need to buy the coin and not the slab

2. since you are new to collecting I suggest posting any coins here prior to pulling the trigger if you have time regardless if its slabbed to get an assessment of the coin itself. you have folks here that have been collecting for decades and even own local coin shops.

3. buying raw coins can be a winner if you know how to grade and assess coins you can get great deals.

4. learn what a cleaned coin looks like. review threads on this site where folks explain what they are seeing regarding cleaning. there are multiple difference ways to clean a coin. from lightly dipping a coin to extreme polishing and damage

5. pick a series that interests you and study that series. there are tons of sites out there with great info to acquire knowledge. the more you know, the less you will outlay your $$ on coins that may not be worth what you paid

6. just forget about slabbing a coin. its too expensive for most coins and just increases the bottom line of those companies. most collectors do not waste their $$ on doing this
