Hi, I found a 1865 Penny, split planchet error. Is it common to find errors of this type for this era? what's the approximate value of a coin like this?

the weight is 4.96g....normal weight should be 9.4 g

Interesting find.
It looks to me more like a coin that someone has ground the obverse off at some time in the fairly distant past. I don't think a split planchet, which would have to be caused by a fault in the metal plate prepared for striking, would come up with such a smooth surface.
I have seen many halfpennies like this - they were used for the game "shove halfpenny", which required one very smooth side, though it was usually the reverse that was ground off.
I may be wrong, but I would put this in the "interesting curio" pile with no great worth.

Agree, the coin has been deliberately ground down.

Interesting find!

Paddy's explanation seems plausible to me.
