Turkish State mint had a contest for designing a commemorative coin with the theme "Nevruz" (meaning the day to celebrate beginning of the spring season - 21st march. Nev: new, ruz : day in Persian language. 21st march is also the first day of every new year in persian calendar.)

The contest juri has chosen three winners. But no first prize. (don't ask why, didn't make sense to me either, maybe they wanted to give 1000 YTL (~770USD) less)
They declared two second place and a third place winners.

Two coins will be struck with the designs of one of the second place winners Buket ESENER and the third place winner Betül UGURLU.

I'm expecting further announcements since the present one makes total nonsence.
Don't know why no first place winner is selected by the jury, why one of the second place winners Ahmet SIMSEK doesn't get a coin struck with his design on it. If that was in the States, I think A. Simsek could get himself a good case of gender discrimination (both winners to get a coin with their designs are ladies).

I'll keep this topic alive as I get the images of the designs and more info about the issue

Oh by the way, the prizes were as follows:
1st place 3000 YTL plus five of the coins to be struck
2nd place 2000 YTL plus two of the coins to be struck
3rd place 1000 YTL plus two of the coins to be struck

Do the celebrate April fools day in Turkey?
Two second prize winners? If their designs are going to be used I would of thought they would be two first prize winners. Perhaps the designs are going to be so modified by the engraver that they get a second prize for the concept or idea behind the design.

The mint has actually released this coin on 15th without any notice.
I just noticed it in the list of coins available at the mint shop.

The coin looks like this:

Turkish-Mint-Commemorative-Coin-Contest-Has-Winners Turkish-Mint-Commemorative-Coin-Contest-Has-Winners

I've translated the first announcement as there will be two coins, but now I checked it again and it says one coin.
I wonder if my brain is slowing down already or these guys have changed the announcement too.

Still no explanation why they have not chosen any first place winner, or why one of the second place winners doesn't get his design on anything.

my comment about the coin itself is that it looks like a medal rather than a coin. I also can't relate the pictures with the occasion. The sun and arrays look nice though.
