NGC - Doubling and a loss of detail are two clues this isn't a genuine coin.

The Kingdom of Prussia was among the various states of the German Empire that issued gold coins, including the 20 Mark denomination. The 1905A Prussia 20 Mark is slightly larger than a US Nickel and has just under a quarter of an ounce of gold, meaning the melt value for genuine pieces is more than $700. It shows the last German Emperor, Wilhelm II, who abdicated after 30 years of rule as World War II came to a close in 1918.

NGC recently received a submission at its Munich office that included a purported 1905A Prussia 20 Mark. The coin does appear to be struck in a type of gold alloy, but its pale-yellow color (that is markedly different from the original) is a bright red flag.

The problems continue with a closer examination of the obverse. There is a loss of detail that was caused by the die-transfer process that produced the counterfeit die. It is especially noticeable in the hair as well as the ear, the inside of which looks particularly flat. In addition, there is an odd doubling in the lettering throughout the obverse.

The reverse also exhibits a loss of detail, including in the eagle's shield and wings, as well as the crown and its ribbon. The denticles on the reverse seem to melt into the rim of the coin, while on the obverse, they exhibit the same type of doubling afflicting the letters.

While this coin has an intrinsic value equal to whatever amount of gold is in it, it has no numismatic value and cannot be certified by NGC.
