Clearing off my desk, I had set this aside from coin roll hunting. I'm not 100% sure if this nickel is just scraped, or if it lost a lamination flake. The metal around the area looks scuffed up, but the interior has the flat, striated quality of a lamination. Thoughts?

I'm thinking that something is on the coin.
Errers and Varietys.

Start with an acetone soak.

I can soak it in acetone, but that patch is indented, not raised.

3 hour soak in acetone, no changes. Now that I have looked at it a while, I am starting to think that the whole coin surface got scuffed, and then a big drop of corrosive liquid sat there for a while.

PMD of some sort most likely.

So possibly the 'indented' (incuse) area might be the coin and the areas around it is something else on the coin.

Thie coin seems to have been struck by Very Late Die Stage dies. There are some heavy N-S die polishing abrasions under the jaw and the collar and strong radial die flow lines.
Could the anomaly be related the die state or being struck through something that is letting the original planchet surface be visible?
