What year had the most coin types (not including commems) made, before 1999 when they started doing the State Quarters? Was it 1875?

I dont know for sure but I would go with 1866 with the 2 cent, 3 cent (nickel and silver) Half Dime Shield nickel, ect... including the gold coins. I counted 16 different coins minted in that year...It is my guess, I'm sure someone here will actually know.

I remember somebody on here had a 1870 proof coin collection he put together consisting of ten different coins and I thought that was a lot, and that set didn't include any gold.

As far as I can tell, these are all the different coins made in 1870.

Indian Head cent
Two Cent Piece
Three Cent Silver
Three Cent Nickel
Half Dime
Shield nickel
dime
quarter
half dollar
dollar
one dollar gold
quarter eagle
three dollar gold
half eagle
eagle
double eagle

That comes to 17 different circulating issues produced by the mint for that year. Wow

That's 21. If you include open and closed 3's as different types (which I wouldn't) I think you can add about 8 more. A of course that's just types. If you went for date and mint combination's the nmber takes another big jump.
