to the CCF, AHorton57! This is not a die clash - just post-mint damage. It appears that your dime spent some time in a parking lot.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

This coin (as already stated) has been heated to such a high temp that the cladding separated from the copper core.

It's not a Die Clash, as noted above, it's heat damage. Sometimes we refer to these as 'Campfire Coins,' but it could have been a house fire, car fire or someone with a torch wanted to see what they could do to the coin. It got hot enough for the clad layer to soften and separate from the copper core. It formed a bubble that then collapsed, leaving the surfaces wavy and pitted.

A Die Clash would show elements of the design from one side of the coin on the opposite side. Usually clash marks can be seen in the fields, but strongly clashed coins can show clash in the deepest parts of the design. You can usually identify what caused the clash marks and even be able to read some mottos and legends, even though they are reverse.

Here's a heavily Die Clashed dime from my collection. It should help you understand what to look for on a coin that was struck with Clashed Dies.

AHorton57,

As mentioned it is heat damage like from a house fire or a camp fire. It is considered PMD not a mint error. Here is a link to learn what a die clash is:http://www.error-ref.com/
