Forgot to ask.. why are these out to the public? Did the mint workers take them to sell them? Or were they collected and given to visitors touring the mint factory?
There has been some incidents of mint workers making/taking error coins home. But most of the errors are made by the presses without mint workers being aware of them. For example the Denver mint has over 50 presses turning out thousands of coins every hour, millions every year. Most are put in large bags, sent to the central banks. Visual and electronic scanning inspections miss errors so they are put in circulation. The US Mint has a YouTube channel showing the process. Here is one:
mcshilling, I was watching the video and thinking the same thing. they should have a little more care for those cents! They leave the Mint alll dinged and scratched
