Good Day All,

I received this Jetton in the mail today and the only bit of identification which came with it said it was medieval in origin. I was hoping somebody could offer any further information about the piece.

Many Thanks
Ben

That one's in much better condition than my early French jeton - I won't even bother trying to post a pic of mine.

Though their design and issue was often sanctioned by the government, jetons weren't actually coins or tokens. They were used by merchants, accountants and other money-people on a counting board, sort of an "abacus for coins". Back when people still used Roman numerals to count with, before decimal currencies were invented and coinage was issued to all sorts of complicated monetary standards, you needed this sort of thing.

They were also used as counters in card games and other games of chance.

Scout,

This was provided by a member of the WINS list. It's in French though...
