If by "this" you mean the large scratch across the neck and the large dints on the rim, then yes, sorry, it's just damage, not a mint error.

As you mention W in your title, I'm assuming what you're looking at is what looks like a "W" to the right of the portrait, halfway between the date and the Y of LIBERTY. As Brandmeister mentioned, that's just the designer's initials.
