I don't think that there was a law against this type of graffiti. But to melt it down it was/is.

Actually, it is unlawful to deface U.S. money just like the American flag. In fact it is unlawful for a business in some states not to have a hitching post in front of their establishment for horses but no one really cares to enforce any of those laws.

Congrats on the find. Quote: I don't think that there was a law against this type of graffiti. But to melt it down it was/is. There are some exceptions to melting cents. As I understand the law, one exception is melting it down for artistic reasons.

I thought it was the same one but doesn't have the flag. maybe they added the flag a year later to celebrate the bi-centennial anniversary. I just received the other day as pocket change one with JFK face imprinted. pretty funny

I believe that's someone else's counterstamp @Alonzowick90. It's not the same bell. It's cool though. To be ready for 1976 pennies they'd hve to have their design ready in at least 1975 for the 1976 pennies. You can also find the bell and states on 1975 pennies as well and probably more. I'm sure other people were trying to make a buck off a penny during the bicentennial. In addition, they had to have these cards printed out ahead of 1976 to be ready for 1976 where they state on the card bell and stamp. It appears the company was getting new 1976 cents at the bank which had some other dates mixed in by accident and there was no quality control being done and hence other dates got out. The majority had to be 1976 though.

. That is a cool counter stamp. I don't have that one but quite a few others. I don't set out to "collect " them but I do keep them. Lol you should see the " stuff " I do keep. Everyone has different ways to do this hobby. John@Dearborn. I knew you wouldn't have said you had one if you didn't. Glad you went back to the post.
