I'm always interested in exploring new topical themes for subsets of US commemorative coins. I recently participated in a "Post Your Volcano and Mountain Coins" thread over in the "Post Your..." galleries area of CCF - it made me take another close look at the coins in the classic-era and modern-era series.

I came up with seven coins/programs that fit the bill in the classic-era series and seven within the modern series. Hopefully, I didn't miss too many!

Some of the coins on the list may come as surprise due to subtle use of a volcano/mountain within their design.

These lists go out to all of CCF's mountain climbers and/or mountain trail hikers. Enjoy!

CLASSIC SERIES

1. 1925 Stone Mountain Memorial
2. 1925 Fort Vancouver Centennial
3. 1928 Hawaii (European) Discovery Sesquicentennial
4. 1934-38 Daniel Boone Birth Bicentennial
5. 1935-36 California-Pacific International Exposition ("San Diego")
6. 1935 York County, ME Tercentenary
7. 1936 San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Opening

MODERN SERIES

1. 1991 Mount Rushmore Memorial 50th Anniversary
2. 1999 Yellowstone National Park - 125th Anniversary
3. 2002 Salt Lake City - Winter Olympics
4. 2005 US Marine Corps 230th Anniversary
5. 2008 American Bald Eagle Recovery and National Emblem
6. 2015 US Marshal's 225th Anniversary
7. 2016 National Park Service Centennial

BONUS: MODERN SERIES - HONORABLE MENTION

- 1995 Civil War Battlefields - Silver Dollar

As I always state in my Index posts, there is quite a variety of world coins on display in the target thread - this time with "Volcano/Mountain Coins" - I encourage you to scroll around a bit after you check out one or more of my US commemorative posts!

I enjoyed reading all of your brief descriptions in the "Post Your ..." forums.

Agreed - and my vote for the most subtle appearance of a mountain is on the Boone Birth Bicentennial, which you describe as:

Quote:
Though not prominent, the sun is shown rising over the Cumberland Mountains, a part of the Appalachian Mountains range.

Glad to hear that folks enjoy these thematic jaunts.

There are so many ways to collect US commemorative coins - it's good to explore as many as possible!
