Regular visitors to the "Post an Ike" thread may recall this 1953 image of Eisenhower in his Augusta National Golf Club jacket painted by Thomas E. Stephens: The connections Ike made at the Augusta National Golf Club (ANGC) would help propel him to the Presidency with a 1952 election victory over Adlai Stevenson. Recent histories of ANGC from Curt Sampson, David Owen , and Steve Eubanks , devote chapters to the influence, power, and fund-raising prowess of Clifford Roberts and others. In his 1976 memoir, The Story of the Augusta National Golf Club, Roberts weaves stories of Eisenhower's time before and after his Presidency, through 90 pages of AGNC history, including this anecdote: Quote: "It was proposed to the General that he debate with Stevenson on TV, and, without consulting with anyone, Ike promptly declined. I asked him why, and he explained that one of his very few advantages was being a bit better known than his opponent, as a result of which he thought it would be unwise to share his audience with Stevenson through any media." --Pg. 128, Roberts A lesser known treatment of Ike, 2012's Eisenhower, Golf, & Augusta by David Sowell, details how golf became intertwined with significant events of his Presidency. The first chapter of Sowell's book is available HERE and includes a brief version of General Eisenhower's first encounter with an ANGC member during the Battle of the Bulge at a war-torn country club near Rheims, France, along with a recounting of the political impacts golf had on the last golfing presidents before Ike: William Howard Taft and Warren G. Harding.
