This week I acquired a complete set of Presidential Art Medals' World War II series , thirty 1.75" bronze medals produced for PAM by MACO and designed by Edward R. Grove. They were issued between September 1966 and November 1970 at a subscription price of $4.00 each: The set came with an archive of the pamphlets for each medal, some vintage Coin World clippings from 1968 and 1969, an original sales brochure, and an order form, all carefully inserted into document protectors by the prior owner: As time permits, I'll post the medals and pamphlets in the order they were issued, per the sales brochure: Seems fitting these nearly 60 year-old medals are joining my collection in the same year as the release of the US Mint's Greatest Generation coins. Should be a fun journey through an interesting medal series ! Edited by cptbilly 08/08/2024 10:42 pm

Pamphlets are chock full of info and teeny-tiny print: Example news clipping: This project should sharpen my pixlr and scanner skills. . .

Received this note from the seller: Quote:
Thank you very much for the nice note. The Medals were part of my father's collection. He was a WWII and Korean war Vet. His passion was collecting coins and paper money, with special focus on Military script MPC He got me started on collecting Military items. I started with Patches because they were cheap and all I could afford ! My collection has grown quite large over the years. It includes Helmets, uniforms, Medals, weapons, field gear, and even Vehicles. But at almost 70 years old, it's time to thin it out some. None of my children are really interested in it, and don't know its monetary value. When my Father passed at 98 he left me with the huge chore of liquidating his collection and splitting the proceeds with my siblings. Something I do not want to do to my kids.

Thanks, Dearborn. I posted a Jimmy Doolittle medal from this series last September: http://goccf.com/t/301479&whichpage=274#3917790Also posted FDR, Truman, and Ike previously. Once I finish this project, all will be available in this thread. My photo posting skills were mediocre at that point but here's the Harry Truman from last year: It made sense to get the set as some of the individual medals command a premium, even without the original boxes and pamphlets; George S. Patton and Ernie Pyle are two examples. I was fortunate to get this set at the price point I paid. Found out about it via an ebay "Saved Search" notice, akin to being "in the right place at the right time," I suppose. A more accurate photo of these medals: [530x530]

I understand completely Billy - my photography skills and editing skills were terrible at first. different sized images and all. it takes time to nail down a process for this.

Advice, Comments Requested re: the nature of this thread The pamphlets accompanying each medal include comments from sculptor Edward Grove regarding the research behind the designs. I find that interesting. These appear to be covered in a paragraph or two and can be converted to uploadable images that don't take up a lot of room. I think they should be included. The pamphlets also function as a "Cliff's Notes" adaptation of the history of each medal's subject. I think that's cool, but I don't know if it's appropriate to post these overviews. As the series advanced, PAM, made the histories longer without changing the size of the printing stock; their solution ? Make the print smaller . While I admit to being a completist, I'm not an indiscriminate one. If inclusion of the histories makes sense, I'll put them in. In a perfect world, I would be able to post a link along with the usual note: " For information about the Battle of Bastogne, go here. . ." I want this thread to be fun and worthwhile. Your thoughts ? Thanks in advance for your feedback. Enjoy your weekend.
