Looks like half sovereigns actually circulated! I wonder what it would have bought back then?

France 1818, 20 francs. Quote: Looks like half sovereigns actually circulated! I wonder what it would have bought back then? That one surely looks to have filled its function as a medium of exchange! I'm not a collector of UK coins, but if I compare with my 20 francs coin shown above, I can make some estimates. Around 1818, 20 francs was about 3 weeks pay for an agricultural worker. It could buy 20 kg of meat or 65 kg of bread. The half sovereign contains 63 % of the gold in the 20 francs, so (converting weight units while crossing the Channel, and assuming prices are about the same on both sides of it) it would buy 28 lbs of meat or 90 lbs of bread. If one was not that hungry, a half sovereign could probably be useful to purchase some clothing or luxury articles. Another figure I have states that 12 francs (which is very close to a half sovereign) could buy an appropriate set of clothes suitable for the city (countryside clothing was much cheaper).
