I want to buy a Morgan as a gift, but I no very little about these coins, including how to tell if an older silver dollar has been dipped or cleaned. If this 1888-O is (approximately) in the MS-60 to MS-63 range and it has not been cleaned, then $75 seems like a reasonable price. But if it's been cleaned, I wouldn't think so. I apologize for my low-quality photos - kinda doing this on the fly. ;-) If it is difficult to determine with these pictures, tell me and I'll work on taking a better photo in a few days. Thanks! *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. *** Edited by dd27 08/20/2024 06:55 am

Nice white luster. Best I can tell uncirculated. I would be proud to own it.

I'll say MS-63. Looks fine to me. I'd buy it.
Errers and Varietys.

Thank you all so much!
I prefer to buy from local coin shops, but I was burned once a few years ago by an unscrupulous shop owner, which left me feeling suspicious - a feeling I do not like!
I really appreciate your help.

It should be okay. Looks like a nice piece some refer to as Choice BU (MS63).

the 88(O) is a common date morgan. typically you'll see soft/weak strikes this year. i'd say this one is AVG+ for strike. it appears there is broken luster across the cheek which would keep it out of the 64 box, the reverse is nice. I would call it MS63 as well. I do not see any signs of cleaning. since it is such a common coin you are not going to see much appreciation over the years but it would be a nice gift.
slabbed they go for about $100. I think its a decent price. I would purchase some airtites to put it in prior to giving it though just to protect it.
