The problem with a QR code is you rarely know where you are being sent. Is the sticker on the table legit from the restaurant or is it a different site from an evil person...

jbuck, do you really believe Gen Z checks the app/account to verify the amount charged was correct?
I do not care what they do. I am not their babysitter. I only care what I do. Or do not.

Those ridiculous fees add up and eat away at their profits.
Almost all pass those fees to their consumers. The nice places would give a cash discount, and now the rules allow most of them to explicitly add a convenience fee. It will show on the receipt—if you get one.

Visa, MC, and AMEX used to have it built into their merchant accounts that you weren't allowed to pass it on or require a minimum charge. When COVID hit, they all took it out and allowed it, doubt they're going to put it back.

iirc, individual states also had rules about credit card companies not being able to force merchants into agreements where they couldn't give a discount for cash (or demand an up charge for credit card transactions).

The Ohio Senate introduced a bill last year that would make it illegal to refuse to accept cash for in-person retail transactions. The state House has not yet introduced anything, so that might mean the bill is going nowhere.

So, since there is no federal law, this being America, probably every state is taking a different approach and there are 50-odd answers to the question.

Personally, I am fine with credit cards, but don't like loading apps on my phone, so a business that requires it will not be seeing me.

My government has a war on cash going. It and their excuses for incompetence at Brussels and Frankfurt. No big transactions allowed.
No matter, the more they squeeze the more people ignore their rules. Cash is still king here.

This is all a push to a Central Bank Digital Currency. Until us "boomers" are gone, that will be a hard sell.

jecz79 - I remember taking groups of British and American tourists on bus tiours around Spain and Portugal in the late 1980s, Most places in Spain accepted credit cards quite happily then, but in Portugal I remember you needed cash everywhere! I remember one tourist from my bus getting very annoyed trying to buy some film at a camera shop that had American Express, Visa and Mastercard stickers in the window, but still insisted on cash payment!

Cash is still king for me, and I'm very much of the generation that gets branded as "tech-obsessed". I will use my card if I have to, but most of my transactions are cash. I try and avoid places that are card-only, and will avoid like the plague anywhere that insists I download an app.

I, too, find it eerie the amount of monitoring that occurs. If I can short-circuit that data supply, I will.

Going back and re-reading earlier parts of the thread, I saw this:

Quote:
I went to pay some property taxes in Pennsylvania. They would not take cash or a check. They said theft was too great. They would only accept a cashier's check.

Till 2021 when I sold the place, I used to go in person to pay propety taxes on a property I owned in Franklin County, OH. I was surprised to see people in line with wads of cash to pay their taxes. I just checked, and they still accept both cash and personal checks, so again, this is a decision made at the local level.

By the way, @allnews, how was the ballgame? I haven't been to one in a few years, so I'm envious.

Exactly what I have been saying. The younger generations do not care. When we die, so will cash.
