Hi Everyone! I was searching coin rolls yesterday and came across something that made my heart skip. Granted the coin is beat up and filthy, but there's no denying that it doesn't have the copper colored top coat. Should I send it in? What are the benefits to getting it certified? I have a really cheap picture microscope and I am having trouble getting good pictures with it. If anyone has any suggestions on that, I would appreciate it. The penny weighs 2.49g
I know that new errors are rare, but I am pretty darn confident that this is definitely one.

Theartofsarah,

Do not send it in.
Not an error, PMD. Looks like an early-stage Dryer Coin to me.
15 photos is a bit much. Always start out with one full coin pic obverse and one reverse along with one or two close ups. If we need more, we will kindly ask.
Check out the photo section of the forum for hints. What make and model scope do you have?

to CCF.
the weight is spot on for a copper plated zinc cent.
I can see the copper plating on this coin it also appears that is has maybe worn down and getting to the zinc core.
This is just an environmental effect. not worth the cost of having it Graded.

I'm thinking an early stages Dryer Coin. PMD. Not worth getting it graded at all. Save your time and money.

@Theartofsarah Tend to agree with Errers and Varietys assessment. At first, thought it might have had an acid treatment, but the weight is correct for a 1988 D. (2.5 grams)

Thanks guys for the response! I will work on my postings. I have some cheap thing off Amazon, Tomlov. Paid all of 25 bucks for it. Worth every penny, just getting an idea of how tiny some errors or damage is.
