When I first saw this, I thought it was just damage, but it looks like it goes all the way across but was struck over the damage. I may be just seeing things because I want to. Thoughts?

Agree, a lamination on a very well circulated 1916.

Likely lamination, corroded coin, little numismatic value.

Could be an old (de) lamination then worn down from circulation. Not really worth any kind of premium though.
