I inherited a tin of old coins recently and this was in it. I have been trying to research but am just starting to realise the scale and complexity of the job. I've put "genuine" in quotes, because Maria Theresa thalers continued to be made long after 1780 (and are still being made today). These are called "restrikes"; they have the correct weight and fineness but obviously weren't actually made in 1780. They trade in the Middle East as bullion coins. The weight will probably tell you something. If it weighs roughly 28 grams (perhaps minus a little it for the hole), then it's probaly a restrike. If it's significantly lighter, it's probably a jewellery replica. Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis Report this Post to the Staff
