I am helping a friend to sort through her husband's stash of coins. Today, I got the first part of the hoard—many pounds of circulated Ike dollars. I know that I can cobble together a search list myself, but given the expertise of Jbuck and others, it seems sensible to just ask what I should look for. I know the basics like 1972 Type 2, but I am willing to search for minor varieties under magnification, assuming there are any worth looking for. Her mindset is definitely to liquidate these. Any pointers on value and efficient liquidation method would be appreciated.

Frog, let's be realistic. I'm not photographing 200-300 circulated Ike dollars. I want to have a good variety search list, go through the coins, and post any finds for evaluation and confirmation. Jbuck, that was a good link. For example, I see that I missed the Friendly Eagle. Are there any other obvious omissions from my list? That was just my quick scan of Variety Vista.

Good luck on your searches. If nothing else than ebay, there are plenty of listing but prices are out of range for common ones.

That's just a darn lot of Ikes. I would say that over 50% of them are still in mint state. Lots of golden toning from being stored in an attic. Barely any Denver coins (not terribly surprising), but I was overall really surprised at the condition. There are hardly any coins below AU grade.

A short update on the hunt. This afternoon, I got started with the 143 dollars from 1972 Philly. My reasoning was that the 1972 Type 2 $1 is the key coin, so I might as well start there. I believe I found a strong candidate for a Type 2 in the first batch of coins. That coin has already been posted on the variety forum for confirmation. After getting about 3/4 through the block this evening, I have also found four examples of what appear to be DDO-003. That is the strongest DDO for the 1972 Philly dollars, with nice notching on ERTY and distortion on IGWT. I will photograph and post one of those tomorrow. Finally, I have a small stack of possible weak DDO coins that show the notching on the serif of 1. Overall a very fun hunt so far, I am hoping that the other years are just as enjoyable. =)

Finished with the 1972 Philly block tonight. Found another three DDO-003. Also found another Type 2 candidate. I knew as soon as I flipped it over. It has a deeper relief than even a Type 3, and the gleam is much more intense than the circulation strikes. I could be wrong, of course, but I think it's pretty solid.
