A friend found a Somalia 5 shilling in circulation in Tampa. It was mistaken for a US 5 cent piece. They are about the same size.
What is interesting is one side of the coin has a elephant on it and the wording "XXI CENTURY.2000.FOOD SECURITY"

Anyone have a idea on the origin of "food security"?

Nice looking coin.

Thanks, Jim

It's usually a coin for FAO, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN, which you can read more about here

http://www.fao.org/

Many countries usually put out FAO coins, and they all say XXI CENTURY.2000.FOOD SECURITY.

I'll show you two of mine when I can pull them out of the bucket.

Here you go: 50000 lire from Turkey and 1 Chon from North Korea. What I've found is that most of these FAO issues are on coins that have little nominal value...

It is amazing to me that you found a Somalia 5 Shillings in circulation in the US! That is a great find. As WD said many countries put these coins out with FAO some coins will say make more food or grow more crops to raise awareness within the country.
