$5,880. Coin is dark, but the surfaces look pristine, at least to my eyes. Looking at other coins of this date, many seem to have been cleaned or otherwise impaired looking at the surfaces. Been looking for an example of this date for a while and this one stood out in terms of originality. Have you ever looked at a coin that seemed to call out to you saying: "Buy me!" This one appeared to scream it, haha. TPS grade opinion in 48 as usual. Thoughts? Thanks!

Obverse could squeak to XF, but the weak strike on the reverse will hold it back. VF-35. Great looking coin, congrats!

One of the reasons for waiting for a nice example of this coin is it's unusually small mintage of just 7,776 coins, which compares to 160,295 1795 flowing hair dollars, 79,920 in 1796, 327,536 minted in 1798 and 423,515 in 1799. There is no other early (pre-1804) dollar that had a lower mintage other than the 1,758 in 1794.

From what I've read, 18th century mintage figures referred to all coins minted that year, regardless of the date displayed on coin. I think that I read that many 1797 dated coins were struck in 1798 and were included in that year's mintage figures. Therefore we will never know how many 1797 dollars were really struck.
