I didn't find 1976-D Type 1 listed specifically on Ike Group Info, but I assume that die over-polishing can happen on any die. The lettering in Liberty is certainly skeletal and eroded. Is this extreme enough to be considered an actual peg leg R?

Looks close, but I think I still see some outward curving towards a weak serif.

Definitely worth a longer look and consideration.

I hadn't checked the VV obverse varieties, thanks for the reminder, Dearborn. I didn't realize that the bicentennials had two obverse designs. Perhaps I am comparing the high relief ODV-008 with other ODV-009 serif R coins? I had noticed that only this 1976-D was Type 1 reverse, the other five were Type 2 reverse. Were the die marriages ODV-008/RDV-004 (Type 1) and ODV-009/RDV-005 (Type 2)?
