So someone please illuminate my self how do you tell the difference between PMD and damage caused by the mint?

Mint errors and PMD are completely different categories. Your coin is just showing PMD. Not an error. Scratches, scrapes, bumps, etc are just PMD. I'd suggest studying on error-ref.com and doubleddie.com, so you can learn the differences of errors, varieties, and PMD. Note on your coin, the movement of metal as the damage was occurring, and the result.
