Hey guys, I'm starting to metal detect, but I have no idea where to do it. I live in Laguna Niguel, CA.....I've heard to go to old schools but they're all gated and locked, and there's no way I'm goin to the beach!
Does anyone know any empty areas to go to out here?

-I really appreciate any replies!

Why not hit the beaches? The best time would be early morning just as the sun rises or an hour or 2 just before sun set. City parks are also a good place, just check the local laws and make sure it is not against any rules. I would also try going to the mountains and detecting in some of the shallow mountain streams. It is said that only an estimated 10%-15% of the gold has been found out there. Good hunting.

thanks for the reply! my problem with the beaches is that for one, it is PACKED before the sun rises till it closes, and I dont want to hear all the crap from all my friends that recognize me, cause they dont understand. Metal detecting is an addiction, it'd be like me asking why do you smoke? lol. Maybe i'll try and head out to a less populated area like a trail, but do you think parks here ( crowded city) would be better than old ones in unpopulated areas?
-thanks!

Orange County, California is a GREAT place to detect for one reason, POPULATION. Good places include busy Softball fields, especially in the outfield where a position is played, soccer fields, parks after a busy weekend, especially the 4th of July, beaches (around fire pits, volleyball courts, around life guard towers), campgrounds up in the Cleveland National Forest. If you go out to the Inland Empire, there are more great places to detect. Riverside has a very large soccer complex, hit the sidelines areas where parents cheer on the kids. Back in Orange County, along the Santa ANA River Bed trail when coins and jewelry get lost along the side of the trail. The list goes on and on! Good Luck!

I mostly hunt in north orange county, about 25 miles north of you. I like the older parks, better chance of finding older items. Once found a purse frame (circa 1890-1910) and about a foot away some jewelry of the same time frame. I know it had fallen into the lake maybe 100 years ago and then the lake was dredged and the mud piled up on shore sometime later, but many years ago.

A friend of mine lives in Balboa and when they were doing sidewalk and street rebuilding a few years ago he found hundreds of silver coins during that period. His find got front page photos in (I think) Western & Eastern Treasures.
