Any idea what is going on here and if this has any numismatic value? Looks like a split planchet or something? Also missing rim it appears. Photos show it on top of a regular cent, and next to a regular cent, then the obverse, then the reverse assuming it uploaded in order. Any info appreciated.

Itamae, it looks like your cent has been on a bad acid trip - the acid has eaten away the surfaces and the edge.
Here is one that I found which is not quite as severe as yours.

I assume this is normally done on purpose? How does this typically happen?

Yes.

Science class or in a basement, shed, or garage after learning about acids in science class.

So I assume the value of this coin to be exactly one cent?

Yes, value is one cent if you can get someone to take it. Coinstar would certainly kick it out.

I agree, technically less if someone refused to take it. And I am also certain a Coinstar will reject it.

Personally, I would keep it as a fun example of what can be done to a cent.
