1978 Penny Missing Designer Initials VDB

Attached are three images of a no mint mark 1978 penny without the designer initials on the obverse. I took the photos at several different angles to make sure this wasn't caused by shadowing. But the initials a not there. Only a slight ghosting on the very top of the letters is visible.

The initials are there, they are just very faint.

Those tiny letters are raised on the die and are easily susceptible to being polished off.
