I took it as any clearly discernible bird or fish and would have excluded that coin, especially if found in the Numista search bar. Here were my search terms:

Main thing I see wrong with NumisEd's guess is that he didn't specify a date for a multi-year issue...
Theme has to do with what's on the reverse I would think.

I took the meaning of theme, as not meaning the standard design.
I'm still thinking it's one of those Portuguese coins.
