Hi all,

I have a coworker that just showed me an '04 MI Quarter he got as change that we both feel looks just a bit "off". It appears as though it has been punched onto a silver planchet rather than a clad planchet. Is this possible?

I won't say it is impossible but the odds of it occurring are infinitesimally small. The only silver planchets used for quarters are at the San Francisco Mint and should never be and the Denver or Philly Mints where the business strikes are minted. Get an accurate weight, that should tell you all you need to know- 6.3g for silver vs 5.7g for CuNi clad.

Hi Guys and gals,

Simple. There are silver ones that were made for special sets. They sometimes get placed in circulation by someone breaking up a set or by someone who has a single coin.

First step. See if the coin has an S mintmark. If it does you have a silver coin.

The next thing to be aware of is that there are millions of these that have been plated with, gold, silver and platinum by those coin hucksters on TV and elsewhere.

I would suspect the first scenario with the coin having an S on it.

Then the plating scenario is the next most likely.

Thanks,
Bill
