Note that here the hair above the ear and the eagle's breast feathers are not rubbed flat. This looks like an unc coin to me but liberty has a halo. This is in contrast to the cartwheel luster we expect. The obverse looks unnaturally shiny, especially at the cheek. We live and learn.

I guess no more (about-)uncirculated raw coin purchases at coin shows. I think I will stick with buying circulated Morgan dollars only, if any.

True, I was asking for opinions. But it doesn't help if someone insinuates that I purposedly made bad choices. Fact is, I made the best choice I could at the Coin Show. I sincerely have no idea what I could have done differently. It is like accusing someone from buying a bread made out of saw dust, when the baker insisted it is a wheat loaf. At a certain point, you HAVE to be able to trust a seller. That is why I made the choice to NOT buy Morgan dollars any longer at Coin Shows. That prevents me from making the same, unfortunate choices.

@NE, I have seen HB here for a while, and I am pretty sure that he wasn't insinuating that you purposely made bad choices. We have all been where you are where we bought a coin that was not the grade that we expected. We are all here today to become better graders and thereby avoid all of the traps that await us in the coin collecting journey. We try to make our mistakes early, learn from them, and avoid costly errors. We are all here to learn and make better grading choices. Today has to be a frustrating day. Hope that you don't get discouraged and continue traveling with us.

I am happy to continue "traveling" with you all. But I don't think I have the patience and time to become a truly good/great grader. Perhaps it is like learning skiing: you have to start at a very young age to become really good at it.

NumisEd, I'm sorry if you feel that I was insulting you, for that is certainly not the case. I am not very good at grading, so I stay away from coins where the grade is a major determinant of its value. I have made some very expensive mistakes in the past, and will probably do that again in the future.

If you ask folks around here, I sucked at this when I came to this site in my late 40s about 8 years ago. I've just taken a few steps on a long road. It gets more fun and more frustrating as you go along. The ones who remain here through the years find the challenges rewarding, I think.

Re-reading this thread, cannot see where someone accused you of purposely making bad choices. God knows I've made a lot of bad choices on raw coins and notes. It forces you to learn how to grade, and it takes a long time, believe me. Keep at it.
