I was thinking of bidding on this one but didn't really need another 1798 dollar. It ended up selling for $3,497.50, which surprised me because I thought it would go higher than that. Anyhow, you never know how high the high bidder was willing to go. Seems like s/he got a great deal.

Anyhow, thoughts on grade?

I'm not good at grading but I'll throw out MS 62 Details - scratches, scrape on ribbon, cleaned
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

MS-62 and yes it looks like it had a cleaning along time ago. I went and looked at the auction. Left wondering also why this it went for what it did.

Clearly not NEW. Old cleaning ( but probably
Market acceptable) . Shows minimal wear .
AU 55 would possibly straight grade in todays
environment.
Would look good in my early dollar set!

I suspect the reverse scratches curtailed the value. At this price level, buyers can afford to be picky. There are also a few scratches in front of the face.

I love the huge obverse die break, though.

Gradewise AU55.

The stars look fake to me. I doubt the authenticity of this coin.

An AU Draped Bust Dollar doesn't go for $3,500. Alarm bells should go off.

Could not say it was cleaned. But I was never good at judging silver from photos.
The scratches are noticeable, pity. But pretty despite them..

Looking at auction prices that is fairly typical for a 1798 Large Eagle with AU details. I buy good AU details coins occasionally because many are excellent, have some minor flaw, and trade at 50% or less of a clean coin.

I'd say AU-55, can't tell if it is details or not - they are very lenient on these.
