Unfortunately LED lighting washed out the subtle yellow-gold toning on the 1988 nickel. That toning with the luster makes it a very nice looking coin. The 1999.....well....its just interesting. I think it was heated from the reverse.

Looks more like it was at the bottom of a cars cupholder that got sugary drinks splashed on it. The Copper plated zinc cents turn nice colours when heated but I don't know about nickels.

Could be staining. I was just assuming because the reverse is a sooty coppery color and the obverse is the yellow with blue and coppery spots.

I know nickel, unlike copper, is very heat resistant so it would take a bit of heat to get the cupronickel to change color.

The second one certainly appears stained.

The 88 Nickel is certainly showing a bluish toning I've seen them often in uncirculated paper wrapped rolls, the lower coin looks stained ,perhaps was a buried coin at one time.

The second one is stained. Might have been in a cup holder that had liquid spilled on it.
