Hi everyone. I'm hoping I can find some answers here as I've been searching for a month with no results.

My husband died recently, leaving me two medals. One is more of a coin than a medal. It's been tested as 18k gold. It is of Our Lady Of Guadalupe. It is marked "A1804" (A is for anos, which is year in Spanish) Before his death, he found a picture of Princess Margaret wearing the same coin with the same diamond bezel (He sold the diamond bezel). It weighs 35 grams and is in good condition. I can photograph it upon request.

The second is small, and is a medal. This one is also of Our Lady Of Guadalupe, and is dated 1802. This one we found in a book titled "Medals of Spanish Kings: Medals Of Mexico". The book states that at that time, these medals were only made in gold for royalty, and are rare.

My question is where can I sell them? I have been to numerous places and nobody knows anything about them, including Bonhams & Butterfields. I really need to sell them as my husband had no insurance or anything. I am disabled and struggling. I'm hoping someone can tell me someplace I can sell them at. I live in southern California.

Thank you for reading my post. God Bless!

hmmm, if they are rare, they are worth more than their weight in gold and should be sold to some collector who would keep them intact.

Otherwise, there are many places in the U.S. that buy gold. You may not get the highest price from any of those tv ads though. There are more reputable firms like APMEX, KitCo, J&W and I'm sure google would list many more.

Then there's ebay... and there's no tellin' who/where they would end up. But, in the case of ebay, pretty much any gold item will sell fairly, when sold with a reputable jeweller's assay... a document guaranteeing an item's weight and purity, with no regard to numismatic(coin collectability) value.

You best bet for a quick sale would be to get the assay. I am not really a medal collector, so I don't know if there are companies that would grade these as coins can be graded... which garantees their authenticity. You said you had it (acid)tested. Did you get a document of this test? It may be all you need... incidentally, it would give me bad vibes selling/buying an unknown/unmarked without some sort of third party guarantee.

I do have a few medals, and I know exactly what I'm getting into before I commit. Go ahead and put up some pictures... there are alotta very knowledgeable folks here who would be happy to at least take a look... and perhaps trounce me for daring to tell you where to sell them for melt!

, to the community. From your description your medals could be rare finds. If you could post some pictures here we might be able to help ID them. I'm surprised that Butterfields weren't able to help you, they are one of the best auction houses in the US. I would recommend contacting Sothebys in New York. http://www.sothebys.com telphone # 212-606-7000. I'm sure they will be able to identify your medals.

Hi! Thank you for your replies. I'm sorry I couldn't get right back to this.

I took photos. I will probably need a better photo of one of them, this is good for now. I was told by one person that one is a reproduction and one is authentic, by the color of the gold. But it wasn't an expert.

As far as selling them for gold, I know plenty of places I can go in LA. Both my husband and I sold gold down there on and around Hill St. on a regular basis. The problem, is none of them know if they are worth anything for the age. Either that, or they are trying to get them from me cheap. I'v e been offered from 16-22 dollars per gram. I just don't want to do that, and read months later that person sold them for 80k or something. I'll commit suicide.

I will call Sothebys. Thanks for the number.
