I live fairly close to Denver and when buying rolls from the bank nearly all the coins are from there, the occasional P that I find is very beat up, and have yet to find an S.
Would it help to buy rolls from closer to Philadelphia or San Francisco?
If yes, suggestions on how to do that?
Does anyone on the East Coast have trouble finding Ds?
Would appreciated any insight on how the distribution of coins works.

Coins are ordered by banks from the Federal Reserve district they are in. The Fed sends what they have on hand in their vaults to fill those orders. Whenever they run low, they place an order with the Mint.
Coins should come from whatever Mint branch is closest and has coins on hand. General rule of thumb is that east of the Mississippi comes from Philly, west from Denver. However, I have to assume the laws of supply and demand can blur that division.

Even the mix from the 70s and 80s is like 75% skewed towards Philly. When I search old hoards, same deal, almost all Philly. Most of the time the Denver coins are absolutely beat to junk—they travel a long way to get here, and make many stops along the way! Works pretty well if you search Jefferson nickel modern DDRs, as almost all of them are on P minted coins. Odds of finding a 2005-D speared bison are about 0%. Maybe you've got good opportunities to find rare modern Denver coins? =)

I have always lived on the East coast and finding "D" coins has always been more or less a chore. They do show up from time to time, but not that often.
Back when San Francisco was making coins for circulation, they were even harder to find. It was always a cause for celebration (and wonderment) when one ended up in my change.

I've lived just west of Denver for 10 years and only get Denver MM coins (occasional S & P). My collection from my Dad & his Father are mostly Philly MM, pre 1980. They were in NYC & DC. Re: finding coin rolls from other mints you could buy from ebay. Just be mindful of the shenanigans that can occur there. I have purchased rolls from various sellers from Philly Mint for many different years. Found nothing amazing however. Edited by Tacc

Thanks Brandmeister, jpsned and Tacc. That confirmed my suspicions. I am very leery about ebay too. Guess I need to find an east coast friend to ship some coins for me :)  Thanks again everybody |

That explains why some of the rolls from the bank are Lomas rolls.

I'm in CT and actually have no problem getting Ds now. I think its mostly from the amount of travelling people do nowadays. When I was younger, it was very rare to get D coins here. The only 2024 nickel I have is a D nickel.
Maybe work a deal with someone close to the Philly mint and cross ship rolls of coins to each other. I would think that would be more cost effective than buying rolls online.

I'm in Central Texas and for the most part only ever see D MMs.
I've not spent a lot of cash since the pandemic so I have a LOT of holes to fill!

I feel lucky ! Being from the midwest, I see a great mix ... roll hunting has been fruitful for most mint marks.
